A common concern among our customers is the presence of phthalates and other potentially harmful chemicals in their home. Naturally, they want to know what is in the products that they are considering purchasing. We have always developed our products with health and safety in mind, and want to make sure that all of our customers are comfortable with their purchase.
What are Phthalates?
Phthalates, short for “phthalate esters”, are chemical compounds made from phthalic acid by reacting the acid with alcohol. Phthalates are mainly used to make plastic materials more flexible and durable, or to soften polyvinyl chloride (also known as vinyl or PVC).
Phthalates are used in all sorts of products, including glues, electronics, building materials, detergents, packaging, and pharmaceutical equipment and tablets. Odds are that phthalates can be found in your shower curtains, floor tiles, food wrappers, or hair spray. About 6.5 million tons of plasticizers are purchased and distributed globally every year, and phthalates make up most of that amount due to their low cost of production.
Are Phthalates bad for you?
This is a topic that is still under heavy research and debate, and has been for the last decade or so. Since phthalates are easily released into the environment, they are easily ingested by humans through food, flooring, and even the air. There is a lot of research going into what sort of health effects this exposure could cause.
Some studies have found a correlation between high exposure to phthalates and cases of asthma and allergies. Some other research suggests that phthalate exposure, particularly as an infant or when pregnant, could be linked to breast cancer, endocrine disruption, or developmental issues like obesity or affected resistance to insulin (which can lead to Type II diabetes).
An important note is that these studies are still ongoing, and correlative findings have yet to confirm any real health effects. It’s too soon to say that phthalates are bad for you at all, or that they are the cause of these health issues. However, the concern is perfectly valid, and we understand why consumers may want to avoid products containing these chemicals.
Are Phthalates found in SafeRest products?
SafeRest products do not contain phthalates of any kind. The only plastic portion of our products is the breathable waterproof membrane layer, and it is not made of vinyl or PVC, and as such does not make use of phthalates as a plasticizer. We went to great lengths to ensure that our products are hypoallergenic and safe for all of our customers, regardless of age or health condition.
Do SafeRest products contain fire retardant chemicals?
Many of our customers have strong opinions against fire retardant chemicals and treatments, and are looking for products that are as chemical-free as possible. With this in mind, we have never added any fire retardant chemicals to our products. You can rest easy knowing that your bed is protected by clean, healthy SafeRest materials, with no potentially harmful chemicals added along the way.
