TENCEL is truly a revolutionary fabric with superb performance benefits. It’s what makes the new Perlux mattress protectors so soft and cool to the touch, and allows them to wick moisture away from the sleeper. The secret behind the fabric is in its unique production process:
The TENCEL creation process starts in a eucalyptus forest, which is responsibly farmed and maintained according to strict organic farming standards. Eucalyptus grows very quickly, making it easy to replace after a tree has matured and is harvested. This allows TENCEL trees to be sustainably farmed, meaning the forest will not shrink in size as a result of TENCEL’s production. The organic farming process relies primarily on rainwater, and does not use synthetic fertilizers or pesticides after the early growth stages.
Once harvested, the tall eucalyptus logs are cut down into small chips, which are then chemically digested into a soft wood pulp. This pulp is then bleached and dried into a long sheet, which is rolled onto spools. These rolls are moved to the TENCEL mill, where they are broken into small squares and dissolved in a natural solvent. This solvent is recovered and recycled in a unique closed-loop process, which received the European Award for the Environment from the European Union.
The solvent process results in a cellulose solution, which is pumped through a spinneret that produces long strands of fiber. The cellulose fibers are washed with demineralized water, detangled, and spun into yarn. Then, the yarn is compressed in a crimper, giving it texture and bulk. This crimped fiber is mechanically carded to separate and order the individual strands, which are cut and baled. The bales are then shipped to a fabric mill, where they are spun into the final TENCEL yarn, ready to be included in Perlux’s premium manufacturing.
TENCEL is used in many different applications, from clothing to baby diapers to medical dressing. Because it is made with water, it’s able to regulate temperature better than competing fabrics, and its unique manufacturing makes it softer and smoother than silk or cotton. These revolutionary properties are why we selected it for the new Perlux line of bedding protection products. Try a Perlux mattress protector, and you’ll feel the TENCEL difference.
